Why it is in the guide

The pub’s story

The Shoogly Peg at 133 Rose Street is a small contemporary cocktail bar with a short, traceable modern history rather than a claimed ancient pub pedigree. A 2015 local pub account identifies its predecessor as the Gordon Arms and says the new name had opened around the start of December 2014; that opening date is a retrospective observer’s estimate, so it should remain attributed. The same account recorded a makeover while retaining the old bar. In 2015, a Tennent’s mural on the Shoogly Peg and neighbouring Rose & Crown was commissioned, then reportedly had to be covered after the council highlighted consent requirements for listed buildings. Today the operator focuses on cocktails, local beer, whisky, board games and weekend live music. It is a compact, dog-friendly late stop: choose it for small-scale atmosphere and an actual music listing, not for unverified tales about the building.

During your visit

What to notice

  1. 01

The venue is small and its website says it cannot admit anyone under 18 because of its licensing conditions.

  2. 02

Friday and Saturday live music is listed by the operator; check the current event entry before travelling for a specific performer.

  3. 03

Dogs are welcome, but the late, compact room can feel crowded. This is better for a small group than a large crawl.
