Why it is in the guide

The pub’s story

Newbarns is a working Leith brewery with its taproom next door at 13 Jane Street. The important dates are distinct: Newbarns Brewery Ltd was incorporated in July 2019; CAMRA records brewery production beginning in 2020 after the founders moved north with experience from breweries including Kernel and Siren; and the adjacent taproom opened on 20 October 2022. That sequence matters because the bar is not the brewery’s origin, but its public-facing extension. The taproom puts Newbarns beers at the centre in a simple industrial setting, rather than staging a faux brewpub. Real-ale production began in late 2021, though cask should not be promised as a standing feature: CAMRA found the handpump out of use in June 2024. The Skinny’s opening review reinforces how recent the public taproom is. Expect fresh beer and a direct view of a small independent brewery, not a traditional pub interior.

During your visit

What to notice

  1. 01

This is a working brewery and adjacent taproom, not a themed imitation of one.

  2. 02

The brewery, the company and the taproom each have different start dates. 2019, 2020 and 2022 respectively.

  3. 03

Check the live board for dispense format; historic real-ale production does not guarantee a cask line on every visit.

Companies House provides the active company and July 2019 incorporation record. CAMRA’s separate brewery and venue pages supply the 2020 brewery opening, late-2021 real-ale production, exact October 2022 taproom opening and June 2024 handpump caveat. The official site confirms current 2026 operation. Company formation, brewing and taproom milestones are kept separate.
