Why it is in the guide

The pub’s story

Juniper occupies the first floor of 20 Princes Street, inside Hotel Indigo Edinburgh. Princes Street. The current cocktail bar is modern, but its setting is decidedly older: the Category B Royal British Hotel building was designed by J. MacIntyre Henry in 1896-98, with an earlier 1837 rebuild at No. 19 forming part of the listed address. Juniper first appeared in 2013, before IHG announced the conversion of the Royal British Hotel into a Hotel Indigo property in 2016. Today IHG lists the bar as a first-floor, daily-open venue; Juniper’s own material emphasises cocktails, gin, whisky and city views. That makes it a useful weatherproof “drink with a view” rather than a rooftop: take a window table on the Princes Street frontage for the best outlook across the gardens toward the Old Town. The historic chronology belongs to the building, not to the present bar.

What to notice

  1. 01

Juniper is a first-floor indoor bar, not a rooftop; ask for a window table if the view matters.

  2. 02

IHG lists the bar daily from 12:00 to 23:00; restaurant and food service may follow a different schedule.

  3. 03

The listed-building history is for the Royal British Hotel building; Juniper itself dates from the 2010s.
