Why it is in the guide

The pub’s story

Joppa Rocks stands at the east end of the promenade, squeezed between Joppa Road, the shore and the neighbouring pumping station. Planning drawings identify the small 84 Joppa Road building and refer back to earlier consents before a 2022 variation for window extensions. CAMRA records the more memorable earlier use: public toilets. The venue opened in May 2023 as a waterside seafood bar, then clarified on 22 May that visitors were welcome to stop for a drink without ordering food. The official site now lists daily 12:00 to 21:00 opening, seafood-led menus and a full bar. The building is modest, so its value comes from the position and reuse rather than a grand interior. Pair it with the Ormelie Tavern for contrast: one preserves an early twentieth-century lounge bar, while the other turns a small municipal shore building into a contemporary drinking and dining stop.

During your visit

What to notice

  1. 01

The compact building was formerly public toilets beside the pumping station, which explains its unusual scale and position.

  2. 02

Drink-only customers are welcome, despite the seafood-led menu.

  3. 03

The glazed canopy, circular octopus sign and pale stonework distinguish the small shore frontage.

Sources & confidence

The official Joppa Rocks site and contact page establish identity, address, telephone, seven-day hours, seafood offer and current public operation. CAMRA independently supports the May 2023 opening, former public-toilet use, proximity to the pumping station and drink-only access, and provides a current exterior. The 2022 planning drawing and application record corroborate the small building and window-extension proposal. OpenStreetMap fixes the coordinates. No older licensed use, protected status or deeper building chronology was found. Chronology retains five meaningful events; earlier consents are indirect and the drink-only statement is an announcement.
