Why it is in the guide

The pub’s story

Captain’s Bar is a small folk-session pub in a c.1790 Category B tenement, just off Nicholson Street. CAMRA records a long public-house history at the current site but sensibly separates that from the age of the building. The narrow room retains old dado panelling, an original back gantry, a James Gray whiskies mirror, unused water taps and a former snug; the counter itself was shortened in the 1960s or 1970s. The living culture is equally important. The bar hosts unamplified folk sessions with musicians sitting among drinkers, so quiet listening is part of the experience rather than a decorative theme. It was runner-up in CAMRA Edinburgh’s 2024 Real Ale Quality Award and remains a daily, music-led local pub. Its atmosphere comes from survival, use and etiquette. Not a museum reconstruction.

During your visit

What to notice

  1. 01

This is a small listening pub: musicians play unamplified among the tables, so keep conversation low during a set.

  2. 02

Look for the long back gantry, James Gray mirror, old dado panelling and unused water taps.

  3. 03

The doorway has a small step and there is no under-18 admission according to the venue and CAMRA.
