Why it is in the guide

The pub’s story

Café Calton is a contemporary hilltop café and evening-drinks stop at 38 Calton Hill, not a rooftop bar. Its advantage is the hill itself: inside or from the outdoor area, the view takes in Arthur’s Seat, the Old Town roofscape, Edinburgh Castle and the Forth. The present café opened in 2025, but it sits within a far older monument landscape. Edinburgh’s public walk around Calton Hill dates from 1775; the Observatory, Nelson Monument and other landmarks developed through the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Those dates belong to the hill, not to the café. The modern venue shifts from breakfast and lunch into late-afternoon aperitivo-style small plates, cocktails, wine and beer. It is a useful sunset stop when the weather co-operates, but the uphill approach and exposed setting are part of the experience. Check the day’s conditions and book a table if a window or outdoor view is important.

During your visit

What to notice

  1. 01

Café Calton is on Calton Hill, not a rooftop. Allow for the climb and exposed weather.

  2. 02

Book a table if a window or outdoor view matters, particularly around sunset and festivals.

  3. 03

The official site lists daily hours, but the outdoor experience remains weather-dependent.
