The pub’s story
Ryrie & Co. is one of Edinburgh’s strongest station-side heritage pubs. Historic Environment Scotland documents the site as the Haymarket Weigh House in 1817, then Railway Inn by 1852; the principal block was rebuilt in 1868 and its ground floor and interior remodelled in 1906 for Ryrie & Company, whisky merchants. That makes the 1906 Robert McFarlane Cameron scheme the key date, not just colourful house history. The Category B record and CAMRA both identify the timber frontage, leaded glass, carved gantry, working clock and water taps as surviving features. A careful 2022 restoration returned it to service. It is the right choice for someone who wants an authentic Edwardian interior as well as a pint and food, rather than a generic pre-train bar.
What to notice
- 01
Look for the timber frontage, leaded glass, carved gantry, working clock and water taps. These are the real reasons to visit.
- 02
The statutory listing substantiates the core chronology; early site material is not merely operator lore.
- 03
Official bar hours: Sun. Thu 11:00-23:00; Fri. Sat 11:00-00:00.
The time rail
The building, the pub and its interior may date from different periods. The timeline keeps documented dates separate from tradition.
Historic Environment Scotland records Kirkwood’s map showing the earlier building as the Haymarket Weigh House.
The statutory record says the corner building became an inn by 1852, shown as The Railway Inn; the change may have coincided with Haymarket Station’s 1842 opening.
The Haymarket Inn was built just west of the corner, according to the statutory record.
The building now occupied by Ryrie’s was rebuilt and baronialised; its rainwater hoppers carry the date.
The linked property was remodelled for Ryrie & Company by Robert McFarlane Cameron, creating the key Edwardian interior.
Ryrie & Co. records reopening after a thorough restoration.
Ryrie & Co. continues as a Category B-listed Haymarket pub with a published weekly schedule.
Sources & confidence
Ryrie’s official history gives a detailed, source-led house chronology from the Weigh House/Railway Inn through the 1906 refit and 2022 restoration. CAMRA’s heritage guide independently supports the 1906 redesign and key surviving features. The early sequence is retained as venue history; the 1906 interior is better corroborated.
